3D Scans of Sculptures

Our company commonly supports industrial 3D scanning requirements. However, we also work with many artists too. Using our high resolution 3D scanner, we can produce 3D scans of sculptures and models. By scanning statues and models, the artist can use the scan data in their design process. If an artist is creating digital 3D models from real-life models/photographs, the 3D scan data can be used to aid this. 

 

Using our High Resolution 3D Scanner 

Systems 3D had a customer come to us looking for some objects to be scanned with our high resolution 3D scanner. We scanned the models and provided the data to him in a life-size scale. However, after we delivered the initial files his wheels started to spin. We were then asked if we could develop a digital 3D model from a photograph and the answer was yes.

Our customer had been a long time fan of Alan Turing. He had seen several other statues around the UK and thought they were good; but not good enough. He had a photograph of Alan Turing which he believed to truly represent his character.

Systems 3D then presented the photo to our digital artist, and he started working on creating a digital 3D Statue of Alan Turing. The process was very similar to traditional sculpting processes. The artist starts with a base model and then presents to the person who commissioned the project for review. We went through about 30 progressive renditions of the digital 3D Statue until we all thought the model was a perfect representation of Alan Turing.

3D Model Production

The model was presented to the customer in an STL format which is suitable for all forms of 3D manufacturing and in particular 3D Printing. This model could also be used for CNC machining of statues or for CNC Moulds for metal, clay, or plastic. The great thing with a digital 3D model is that it can be manipulated. It can also be turned into scale models and other pieces of artwork such as plaques. The picture below represents the various scale digital models that we produced the largest being 450 mm high, and the smallest being 125 mm high.

Systems 3D manufactured several different sized statues for our customer with our Stratasys 380mc machine in an ASA material with medium resolution. These models can be used for presentation purposes, silicon mould making, decoration. They are also for artists who wish to use them as a scale model to produce their model from their medium of choice – such as clay. The models produced in ASA material can be surface finished being that ASA is a very strong but workable material. They can also be coated with a variety of paints, chromes, and lacquers.
